THERE ARE NO QUICK FIXES FOR HEALTH INEQUALITIES
If we see a child dying because its parents cannot get to a local medical facility which is too far – or even when the family gets there after a perilous journey, the clinic has run out of antibiotics and therefore the baby dies, it breaks our hearts.
Yet, this is something that happens every day, every minute in the lives of thousands of people in many developing countries. Poor health service is simply a reflection of poverty. Where there is poverty there is unnecessary suffering and death. Improving health care is important but it is also equally important to take a step back and alleviate the cause of poverty.
In Rotary there are many examples of such ‘holistic’ interventions. One good example is a project supported by District 1040 in which some of the Fellowship’s members are involved.
The project is based on a remote island community in Lake Victoria. The island is called Ukerewe which is accessible only by a three and half hour ferry journey from the mainland town – Mwanza in Tanzania.
During the past five years, several teams of people from the UK and Sweden have gone to the island to work alongside local Rotarians and community leaders to improve health care, water supply and literacy. A microcredit programme including the launch of bee keeping has helped many families improve their earning potential.
The work in Ukerewe has been supported by the Rotary Foundation through 2 matching grants and a global grant.
