UK Achievers Youth Leadership Awards
Please ensure the title above corresponds with the programme you wish to see from the main menu.

Why the 1998/9 Rotary Theme? The programme is based around the 70ft purpose built narrow boat 'Dream Catcher' owned by the Warwickshire Association of Youth Clubs. The 'Dream Catcher' is from the ancient world of the Ojibwe North American Nation "We did not weave the web of life, we are merely a strand in it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves"

The first RYLA programme will run from 22nd to 27th July between Worcester and Stratford-upon-Avon
The second RYLA programme will run from 27th - 31st July between Stratford-upon-Avon and Rugby
Rotary Clubs are invited to find and sponsor an Achiever (that's what we call our RYLA young people) aged 15-17 to take part in the 2010 RYLA programme on our waterways or sponsor and we will select an Achiever to accept the place on your behalf. The Achievers will receive the coveted Rotary Youth Leadership Award and take the new District 1060 Cancal Crew Course. A Leader will be on board at all times during the programme. Information - conditions - student application form can be found at the foot of this page.
Please email John at ryla@btinternet.com to reserve your place
The participants will spend 5 days discovering the inland waterways whilst navigating the canal system. They will learn about the history of this unique canal system in the UK, operate the locks and generally manage the Narrow boat during their trip. The Narrow boat is a purpose built 70ft craft, fully fitted with modern amenities such as: micro-wave and electrics, even lap-top computers can be connected. The boat will be skippered by a qualified helmsman to make sure all goes according to plan
The Achievers will have an opportunity to meet many overseas visitors on the canals, study the wildlife and the Warwickshire Countryside, visit places of interest and even moor up in the centre of town (depending on the route) places to visit such as Worcester Cathedral, take in the culture of Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon, sample the water in the Victorian Pump Rooms at Royal Leamington Spa or sample the local fish and chips to make a change from their own cooking
The week activities are concentrated on: Competition: Friendship: Group Discussion: Sightseeing: International Understanding: Goodwill: Peace. A specially designed canal course will include initiative tests and mind games to identify qualities of leadership and the concept of corporate planning. During the programme the young people will be expected to take the lead themselves through self-assertion and self-motivation
3 Achievers point to the Alcohol Free Zone sign in Worcester city centre and make some suggestions. We listen to feedback from our students and this programme now adopts a policy of no alcohol on Dream Catcher. The whole programme has a strict no smoking policy
The District 1060 RYLA programme received acclaim from Rotary International as qualifying for Rotary Youth Leadership Award status. District 1060 wish to thank the Rotary International RYLA Committee for their continued support
"After reviewing your program, I believe that your submission certainly would qualify for the RYLA Certificate, and that you definitely have a unique venue in which to teach leadership, team-building, team-bonding, many cooperative skills, and all in the spirit of Rotary. (Mark Healy, Chairman of RYLA)

The 5 day RYLA programme is self-catering and the young people will be expected to work together as a team, developing leadership skills whilst in charge of this very sophisticated Narrow boat. Achievers are expected to prepare a menu of their choice. They will be expected to cook and serve to those on board when they are in charge but also show they are capable of delegating responsibilities to their crew.
Dream Catcher has a non-smoking policy throughout the programme and operates in an alcohol free environment. Please keep this in mind when you apply for the programme (if you smoke you will be required to abstain for the whole period). The organisers wish to stress the importance of selecting suitable achievers for the programme. A Rotarian should explain the ideals of Rotary to those selected before they are proposed.
Previous experience on a boating activity is not necessary but the ability to swim and physical fitness is essential and whilst we are fully aware that this may exclude certain individuals from having the opportunity to become involved in such an event it is important that the safety of individuals and the group is paramount and not compromised in any way. All safety equipment is provided on the Waterways.
